It has come to the attention of authorities that a group of thieves has been outsmarting smart devices in the Los Angeles vicinity.

The Los Angeles Police Department's statement on March 4 raised awareness about a group in Wilshire utilizing Wi-Fi jamming technology to disrupt surveillance cameras and alarm systems that depend on Wi-Fi connectivity.

The swarm of tech-savvy robberies taking place in California is a manifestation of a larger-scale "smart" crime wave that is unfolding across the entire country. Last year, police departments in Minnesota and Connecticut raised similar concerns, alerting residents to the presence of organized gangs specializing in Wi-Fi jamming. These instances represent only a fraction of the many occurrences observed.

As reported by KARE11, criminals can easily obtain Wi-Fi signal jammers jamming devices at a low price, despite their prohibition by the Federal Communications Commission. These devices do not deactivate other devices but instead overload the network they are connected to.

Mark Lanterman, a cybersecurity expert, stated that these devices are used to jam radio transmitters, leading to traffic jams that block authentic communication.

In his suggestion, if you decide to utilize a Wi-Fi camera for your front door, it might be advisable to consider using a hardline camera inside your home. Wired cameras connected via Ethernet cables do not depend on Wi-Fi networks and would not be affected by a wifi jammer.

Hard wiring burglary alarm systems is a recommendation made by the Los Angeles police.

As reported by Tom’s Hardware, smart technology might be involved in both the problem and the solution. Officials advise using timers or smart home devices to create the impression of someone being home while you are away. Additionally, some smart home technology can alert users if there is a disruption in the signal or connection.

Tom's Hardware also advises connecting surveillance devices directly to your device for storing camera footage, rather than solely relying on a cloud storage system. By doing so, you can ensure that the footage remains saved even during a Wi-Fi disruption.

Residents are encouraged by the LAPD to maintain awareness by securing their doors, requesting assistance from neighbors to monitor their property during periods of absence, and alerting authorities to any unusual activity, especially involving vehicles displaying temporary or dealer plates.
